Food gardens programmes

Green Development Foundation (GDF) implemented food garden to promote food security, sustainable livelihoods, and environmental stewardship within communities. Food gardens are community-based or school-based agricultural spaces established to provide access to fresh produce, improve nutrition, create learning opportunities, and support local economic development.Our approach focuses on community mobilisation and capacity building, climate-smart agricultural practices, and the empowerment of women, youth, and community groups. Through these initiatives, GDF contributes to improved nutrition, strengthened food security, enhanced environmental awareness, increased community resilience, and sustainable livelihood opportunities.

The Green Development Foundation implemented inclusive raised food gardens, also known as Legacy gardens, designed to accommodate people with disabilities to actively participate in farming and gardening. Legacy food gardens extend beyond immediate food production by addressing educational, environmental, social, and cultural dimensions, thereby strengthening community well‑being and resilience. They reduce the impact of food deserts in low‑income areas, improve access to nutritious food, foster community ties, lower food miles, and support sustainable systems. These gardens have been established in schools and disability centres, leaving a lasting impact on both food security and community development

The Green Development Foundation was contracted by the Department of Correctional Services to provide food parcels for correctional facilities. The programme contributes to improved food security and nutritional support for incarcerated individuals, while strengthening reliable food supply systems within correctional centres. Through consistent and timely delivery, the intervention supports the health, dignity, and well-being of beneficiaries, and enhances the Department’s ability to meet minimum nutritional standards across facilities.
